Lovelight
How a childhood photo inspired my newest design.
Every knitter knows that some projects hold more than stitches.
They hold stories.
For me, Lovelight began with a photo.I'm two years old, cheeks glowing from a morning spent chasing and laughing in the park. I'm holding my mum's hand, wearing a jumper she'd knit for me, soft pink and textured, made with love and yarn from Bellmans, a long-gone high street yarn shop.
In the photo, I'm looking up at her with all the love in the world.
That photo reminded me what handknits really hold. Not just warmth, but love.
So I designed Lovelight, a sock pattern inspired by that little jumper. Delicate lace combines with gentle cables to echo it’s texture. The stitches aren't identical, but for me the feeling is.
The definition of Lovelight is "The radiant look of love in someone's eyes." Such a beautiful word for a beautiful thing. Lovelight shines in that photo, and is the feeling I hope these socks carry.
As with many of my designs, this pattern isn't just about making something to wear—it's about remembering, cherishing, and honouring special moments.
In the forty years since that picture was taken so much has changed in knitting. Then, mum would have followed a paper pattern, knitted flat on straight needles with commercial wool from the local shop. In 2025 I designed the pattern, recorded it on a computer, ordered my yarn online from a hand-dyer and used magic loop. Our options may have changed, but the love we put into our craft hasn't.
I hope you enjoy knitting Lovelight as much as I've loved creating it. If you make a pair, I'd love to see them. Perhaps you'll think of someone you love as you knit, or maybe even gift a finished pair to someone who makes your lovelight shine.
The Lovelight sock pattern includes detailed instructions, helpful photos, and multiple size options to ensure your socks fit as perfectly as the love that inspired them. The pattern is now available on Ravelry, Payhip, and soon on LoveKnitting.
Thank you for letting me share this little moment, and for being part of this journey.
With love, Dani x
